About

PHENOMENAL WOMAN is a sweeping theatrical portrait of Dr. Maya Angelou, tracking the journey of a silenced girl who transforms herself into one of the most powerful voices of the modern age. Through memory, poetry, music and movement, her life unfolds across decades, continents and movements–revealing the cost, courage and calling of speaking truth. This is not just the story of Maya Angelou, but a testament to the enduring power of voice to heal, liberate and RISE.

PHENOMENAL WOMAN was first developed by the North Carolina Black Repertory Company as Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin Rolling World Premiere with workshops at NC Black Rep and the Ensemble Theatre of Houston–directed by Jackie Alexander.

It is slated to open on Broadway in 2028, in commemoration with Dr. Angelou’s 100th Birthday.
